Senior Hurling Championship Final

At St Conleths Park

Confey v Celbridge @4.00pm

What the papers say:

Published on Tuesday 9 October 2012 11:05

FOR the third time in their history Confey are the Kildare Senior Hurling champions. Last Sunday they got the better of four-in-a-row chasing Celbridge in St Conleth’s Park and totally and utterly deserved it too, writes Ruth Chambers.

Senior Hurling Championship Final

Confey: 1-16

Celbridge: 0-14

In the end five points (1-16 to 0-14) separated the sides and Confey were full value for the victory. A goal from John O’Neill with just 42 seconds played laid the foundation for victory and Confey’s first title in four years. Indeed Confey were the last team to win the Sean Carey Cup before Sunday’s opponents Celbridge had their three year dominant period.

Dead ball specialist Paul Divilly scored half of Confey’s final points tally, while Daragh Nolan collected the man-of-the-match award after he chipped in with five points from play.

Celbridge, who have been the standard bearers in Kildare for so long now, weren’t at the proverbial races for the duration last Sunday. The Hazelhatch Road side haven’t been at their best in 2012 and indeed they started an finished their championship campaign with defeat. Ironically the only team to beat them this year was Confey, after a replay in the preliminary round and again in the decider.

Confey, managed by Cork man Ed Holland, had their homework done. Kevin Chan kept the shackles on young Gerry Keegan throughout, indeed they went man for man from the off and totally crowded Celbridge out of it in the middle of the park.

That aside Celbridge’s performance was poor, their shooting by times left a lot to be desired and the relinquished their title in limp fashion. Kudos to Confey all the same. They were hungrier, much hungrier and much better.

Confey signalled their intent immediately. With just 42 second on the clock they had the ball in the back of Niall Lanigan’s net. A pass from Paul Divilly picked out John O’Neill and he fired to the net to give his side an early three point advantage.

Four minutes later Confey’s lead was down to one after Sam White sent over a free and a 65 to leave the scoreboard reading 1-0 to 0-2.

Daragh Nolan opened his account soon after before Sam White, who finished with eight points to his name, converted a free to leave just one in it once again.

By the ten minute mark Confey led 1-3 to 0-4 but that lead was down to just one three minutes later when a free from Sam White out right split the posts.

Two on the trot for Holland’s charges, courtesy of Daragh Nolan and a Paul Divilly free, left them leading 1-5 to 0-5.

Danny Butler pulled one back for Celbridge but the remainder of the half belonged to Creighton Park outfit. A free from Paul Divilly made it 1-5 to 0-6 just a minute before John O’Neill scored a fine point from out on the left wing. Three without response from Divilly completed the first half scoring and ensured Confey led 1- 1-9 to 0-6 at the interval.

A big second half was needed from Celbridge but it never materialised. Instead Confey picked up where they left off in the first and dominated.

By the tenth minute of the half Confey lead 1-11 to 0-9. Firstly Paul Divilly converted a free from 44 metres out after Mark Fennelly was impeded and then came the score of the game. Robbie Connolly was the man to score it from out of the left wing and at that point his side led by five.

Indeed five was the closet Celbridge could get to Confey, who were almost at their leisure in the second.

In the 46th minute Confey could have added a second goal when Daragh Nolan found himself clean through. However, without his hurl his was forced to kick and got too much elevation on his effort and over Lanigan’s bar it went to leave the score at 1-13 to 0-10.

At this point the game was Confey’s to lose and Celbridge were in desperate need of a goal. Danny Butler pulled a point back in the 47th minute but they had to wait ten more minutes before they added to their tally.

During that time Confey goalkeeper Ian Baker pulled off a fine save from Billy White’s free, while down the other end points from Colm Chan and Divilly (free) gave Confey a 1-15 to 0-11 lead.

Three from Sam White, two 65s and one free, followed but it was most definitely a case of too little too late for the team in blue and white, while Daragh Nolan finished out the scoring for Confey to ensure a comfortable five point victory.

Scorers:

Confey, Paul Divilly 0-8 (7f, 1 ’65’), Daragh Nolan 0-5, John O’Neill 1-1, Mark Fennelly 0-1, Colm Chan 0-1.

SHC FINAL

CONFEY 1-16 CELBRIDGE 0-14

HAVING waited 12 months to exact revenge, Confey wasted no time exorcising their demons.

A year ago Celbridge blasted two goals past them inside the first 15 minutes, putting the game out of reach before Confey had time to settle. On Sunday, within a minute John O’Neill struck the game’s only goal, and set the tone for a devastating performance from the new county champions.

Powerless to prevent their rivals claiming a three-in-a-row in 2011, Confey were too powerful for Celbridge to set a landmark in 2012. Their hurling was fast and furious but it was mixed with controlled aggression and Celbridge hadn’t the tools to fight a battle on those terms.

This was not a Celbridge side at their finest but that was largely because they were never allowed to play like the team that reached last year’s Leinster final. Confey never trailed and never allowed Celbridge to get level, never mind take the front, and it was that relentless nature of the winners’ performance that set them apart on a day when their five-point winning margin could easily have been more.

After landing that big blow in the first minute, Confey consistently scored from play throughout, something their opponents couldn’t do. By half-time the ‘Bridge had just two scores from open play and it wasn’t as if their four wides suggested a criminal waste of possession. Despite all the talent in their forward line, there was rarely any space for them to operate in. Confey’s claustrophobic approach to the breaking ball suffocated their opponents and with faith in their full-forward line, the early delivery was rewarded, more often than not.

Man-of-the-match Darragh Nolan did a huge amount for the Confey cause in the opening half with three points from play. The only one of the Celbridge forwards to score more than once during the entire game was free-taker Sam White.

White’s accuracy from placed balls was all that kept Celbridge in contention during the opening half while any Celbridge indiscretions at the back were ruthlessly punished by Paul Divilly. Two frees and a 65 in the first seven minutes from White did much to erase the damage caused by the early goal but Celbridge’s title was really lost in the ten minutes before half-time.

Having got within one by the end of the first quarter (1-3 to 0-5), Confey out-scored the champions by 0-6 to 0-1 in the second quarter and they hit four unanswered points in the last eight minutes of the half. Three of those scores came from Divilly frees while the towering midfielder converted another from a 65.

A point from play from the goalscorer O’Neill in addition to Nolan’s third put Confey 1-9 to 0-6 ahead at the break. In a low-scoring game where more than half the scores came from placed balls, that was too much of a deficit to try and overcome, especially on a day when the best chance of a Celbridge goal was a 21-yard free.

Any hope of a comeback from the champions had to begin with a powerful third-quarter performance but the best they could do was three successive points from the 38th to the 41st minute.

Mark Moloney and Billy White (two) found the range in that spell but it was the only quarter of the game that Celbridge won on the scoreboard (4-3).

A stunning point from Robbie Connolly – a goalkeeper converted to centre-forward for the day – on the left wing suggested it was Confey’s day and two points in as many minutes from Divilly and Nolan restored the half-time lead.

The sides shared eight points in the final 15 minutes and any time Celbridge got one back, Confey replied at the opposite end – Nolan again and Colm Chan scoring fine points from play. In the end Celbridge were reduced to lobbing balls into the square, a tactic that yielded little other than a collection of 65s.

Confey had been in control from the first whistle and as the final one approached, their grip wasn’t slipping. The champions had been beaten by a side playing like champions.

SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL

CONFEY     3-13    NAAS     1-13

Two very late goals from Kieran Divilly and Daragh Nolan ensured a place in the Senior hurling final for the second year in  a row for a battling Confey side in Clane on Saturday Sept 22nd. Confey got off to a great start with 1-1 from Colm Chan in the opening minutes but Naas got back into the game and by half time the sides were level. Confey edged ahead at the start of the second half but Naas seemed to take control when they goaled to take the lead. Confey hit back and took the lead with time nearly up. A late free for Naas tied things up and a draw looked on but with time almost up a long range shot from Kieran Divilly deceived the Naas keeper to end in the net and from the puckout good interchange between the Confey forwards saw Daragh Nolan bury the ball in the net to clinch a well deserved victory.
